Andrew Lloyd Webber and… American Idol?

So, I read a couple of days ago that Andrew Lloyd Webber will be the mentor at next week’s American Idol.  Um, what?  I’m assuming they’re singing ALW songs.  What on earth could these people possibly sing???  Here’s my thought:

David Archuleta: Love Changes Everything or Seeing is Believing

David Cook: Jesus Christ Superstar

Jason Castro: Close Every Door or Any Dream Will Do (that would actually be better)

Carly Smithson: I Don’t Know How to Love Him or Unexpected Song

Brooke White: Don’t Cry for Me Argentina or Another Suitcase in Another Hall (that would be perfect)

Syesha Mercado: Memory

Of course, all of these would be stupid choices.  Well, except for Cook’s and Carly’s.  I could actually see them doing good jobs on those.  I know ALW was on some show in Britain – something about finding the next Maria in Sound of Music.  However, that was FOR a musical.  This is American Idol!  And Broadway night has always sucked on AI.  Must we forget Bo Bice singing “Corner of the Sky?”  Dreadful!

I really have no idea how this will shape up.  Thoughts?

  1. Broadway night doesn’t always suck. Remember Jennifer Hudson singing Circle of Life. And don’t count out David Archuletta on ALW night.

  2. True, true… Jennifer Hudson was made for Broadway – when will she be making her debut? Archuleta will sound good on whatever he sings, but we always know how he’s going to sound. Whereas with David Cook, he always does something different and makes it exciting to watch. Agree?

  3. I don’t necessarily think Jennifer Hudson was made for musical theatre. Though, I do agree she would do well on Broadway. In any event, she’s not an actress… neither vocally, nor in scene work.

And, while David always changes whatever song he’s chosen to perform to sound different than the original, I don’t feel he does anything different from night to night, nor do I agree he’s exciting to watch. He’s got a great voice and his singing style works for him, but I certainly don’t buy his look.

From what I have seen, I think Carly (sp?) and David A. have the most talent.

Are you too old to audition yet? :)

  4. I am seriously scared. Seriously.
