Confessions of a closeted sports fan…

This might surprise some people, but I am actually becoming a sports fanatic.  For example, the football draft was on the other day.  I didn’t watch it, but my mom did ALL DAY.  And I heard about it.  And then I started reading about it.  And then I started forming my own opinions!  This is huge.  I wasn’t a football fan until Vince Young won the Rose Bowl for UT in 2006.  Adam wanted to watch the game since he was a UT alum.  I think I played cards or read a book or something during it.  It was UT vs USC and USC was expected to win.  But USC didn’t have Vince Young.  He pulled it out of his a$$ in the last few minutes.  It was AMAZING!  Since then, I can’t get enough of VY.  And I was so upset when the Texans passed on him for Mario Williams, although Williams did finally show what he’s worth last season.  Hopefully he’ll just continue to grow.  My dad once took me to an Oilers game way back when.  I’m assuming my brother was out of town or something.  Anyway, I read a book the entire first half and then at halftime, my dad said, “OK, let’s get something to eat.”  I said, “But the show’s starting!”  He never took me to another game…  It would be different now!!!  Please just check out this clip (my boy is number 10 for UT):

And let’s talk about why this was so huge.  USC entered the game w/ a 34-game winning streak, which was the longest active streak in Divisian I-A.  Texas had won 19 straight games – 2nd-longest active streak.  Texas was also a Rose Bowl defending champion.  USC’s Reggie Bush (now on the Saints) won the Heisman beating out Vince Young.  VY was not happy about this.  Both Bush and Young had a record number of votes for the Heisman.  The USC QB Matt Leinart (who is now a complete disappointment) had won the Heisman the year before.  A lot of people thought that USC would win.  ESPN was building up USC like you wouldn’t believe – they were saying that they were the 2nd greatest college team ever.  All their time was spent on USC and the Longhorns went under the radar and had one of the greatest comebacks in college football history.  IN YO’ FACE!!!  HOOK ‘EM!!!

Then there’s the Rockets.  We won last night!  I really didn’t expect us to and we even missed the game.  We thought, “Ah well – they were going to lose, anyway.”  They’re back in Utah on Friday night and that’s not good.  However, hopefully the momentum will be enough.  They’re a great team and I don’t see why they need Yao Ming.  Is the guy that good?  I haven’t seen it yet.

I used to be a huge hockey fan.  This was the one sport that my family WASN’T a fan of and of course, it was the one I loved.  I still do, but I don’t follow it like I used to.  I wouldn’t mind Aeros season tickets, though.  There are times when there’s nothing as exciting as a good hockey game.  Soccer is similar to hockey, but I’ve never gotten into it.

I used to love baseball, but that was only b/c it was the one sport I understood.  My brother played for years.  I still like it, but I don’t watch it on TV and I talk a lot when I go to a game, whereas w/ other sports, I’m cheering and talking about the game.

So, there you have it.  I’m a musical theatre performer who can’t wait for football season to come back around.  I know my dad and brother are smiling now.  :-)
